Muon Sources - EUROPE

FACILITY ORGANISATION LOCATION TYPE START OPERATION SOURCE INSTRUMENTS
ISIS
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory

Oxford, UK The ISIS synchrotron produces a beam of protons which is pulsed with a repetition rate of 50 Hz
October 1985. Source of pulsed muons MuSR, EMU and ARGUS spectrometers, together with the DEVA development beam, are used by international researchers to perform muon spin rotation / relaxation / resonance (µSR) experiments.
SµS (Swiss Muon Source) Paul Scherrer Institute - PSI near Villigen, Switzerland. Continous source.
590 MeV isochronous proton cyclotron
Start Operation: Accelerator 1974, µSR Facility 1988
[µSR as such started in 1974]
Intense beams of positively or negatively charged, spin-polarised muons are available at the PSI Accelerator Facilities in the experimental areas µE1, µE4, piM3, piE1, piE3, and piE5. 5 different µSR Facility Instruments: GPS, LTF, Dolly, GPD, ALC. Unique LMU Developments: A Low-Energy Muon Beam and µSR Spectrometer for the study of thin films, layers and surfaces, and the Extraction of Muons On Request for high frequency resolution and slow relaxation measurements.
